Anno 2007 MUSEUM Design.
60 years have gone by since Brebbia started to produce pipes and the "Great Designers" series, which started in 1998, has come to an end after a decade.
The purpose of the series was to present, year by year, the evolution in pipe design with many reflections on the world which surrounds it.
The epilogue of the series coincides with the presentation of the model to commemorate Pipe Brebbia's 60th year.
Given the exceptional nature of this double event it was difficult to find a personage to assume the burden and honour of "Great Designer 2007", so we have chosen another route.
We have decided to commemorate and highlight the production of the pipe itself and - why not - our company which over many years, successful and difficult, has continued to produce
this object which for many of you has become a cult.
We have turned once again to our small Museum which collects together the history of the pipe, and also our entire history.
We have identified and decided to copy a model from 1947, the year of our birth.
This model is however inspired by even older lines, when pipes were made in plaster and when smoking was very different from what it is today. It is an extremely elegant and timeless model,
inspired by the ceramic pipes of the 19th century, but asymmetrical and difficult to turn.
We have had to bring it up to date, or rather to enlarge it as much as was necessary to fit it with a bowl of at least 5 grams capacity, the minimum indispensable to able to smoke
with the thick cut of modern tobaccos, which are definitely better and much more sophisticated and pleasant to the taste but which do not like small bowls. The model was then
balanced in its new size, which was perhaps the most difficult task: the balance of a pipe involves its form and therefore appearance but also mechanics because it must be pleasant
to hold and must not pull at the mouth, as well as being technically problem-free.
We will give a brief summary of the history of the pipe itself and of our company: from a commonly-used object, to its decline with the advent of "fags", from its rebirth with the opening
of new markets, to the crusades against smoking: Pipe Brebbia has continued to produce its pipes.
The Museum has helped us yet again to test a firm conviction of Alberto Paronelli, a great pipe man, which finds us in full agreement: "the pipe will never die".
We invite you to find out more about the history of the pipe by visiting our Museum, with its 2400 items from all over the world, especially on our 60th birthday,
23rd and 24th June, at Brebbia - naturally.
